MOSCOW, 4 Jan - RIA Novosti. The beginning of the year is traditionally a calm period for the Russian fuel market; thus, the situation regarding gasoline prices in January of the new year, 2026, is expected to be stable, especially in light of increased production, shared Sergey Tereshkin, CEO of the fuel marketplace "Open Oil Market" (a resident of Skolkovo), with RIA Novosti.
"Typically, the start of the year is tranquil for the fuel market: for instance, in January 2025, Rosstat recorded zero weekly growth in retail gasoline prices twice, while increases during the remaining weeks of the month did not exceed 0.1%. Therefore, gasoline prices in January 2026 will remain stable. Moreover, at the end of the year, oil producers managed to stabilise fuel output: in October 2025, the production of petroleum products in Russia rose by 6.6% compared to the previous month," he responded to a question regarding expectations for a rise in fuel prices during the New Year holidays.
Tereshkin explained that prices are also influenced by a cooling demand during the winter season. This situation is characteristic not only for Russia but also for other countries with similar climates. For example, in the United States, where gasoline consumption is significantly lower during the colder months than in summer.
In January 2024, gasoline shipments in the U.S. to the domestic market amounted to 8.3 million barrels per day – this is 11% lower than in July and 8% lower than in the year overall, noted the expert. A similar trend was observed in 2025: in January, gasoline demand in the U.S. was 8.5 million barrels per day, compared to 9.2 million barrels per day in July, and during the first nine months, it was 8.9 million barrels per day.
"In Russia, this difference may be even greater due to the 'dacha' factor, which is absent in the U.S. This also relates to the holiday factor: while in the U.S., Christmas and New Year holidays fall at the end of December, in Russia, they occur during the first decade of January," he added.
